The project comprised the substantial refurbishment of the derelict Earl Grey Public House to provide a new restaurant/cafe bar with kitchen and toilet provision on the ground floor and two self contained contemporary apartments on the first floor.
Possibly the most striking feature of the building is the new Kiosk and Canopy that adorns the deck area which includes atmospheric lighting to create a visually stunning outside space. The deck area had to be carefully strengthened and rebuilt to allow for the new structure.
One of the most challenging aspects to this project was that logistically the building is in a very narrow road in Folkestone therefore deliveries of materials and storage all had to be carefully planned. The interior of the building was in very poor condition so careful shoring-up and bracing of the structure was also necessary to allow work to safely progress.
Working closely with the client and their appointed Architect the project was completed successfully within the contract period and budgetary constraints.
The refurbished finished building is an excellent example of the quality of work D.J. Ellis Construction Ltd can produce and how an extremely run down derelict building can be given a new lease of life without having to demolish it and build from new.
